What should I expect to pay for borehole drilling?

Accepted Answer

Costs vary by location, ground conditions, and drilled depth. Across most of Kenya, expect roughly KES 5,500 to KES 6,500 per metre for drilling, casing, and gravel packing. Hydrogeological surveys, permits, pumps, solar packages, storage tanks, and elevated towers are quoted separately. We provide a site survey and written quotation before drilling begins.

Pump pricing depends on your test pumping report and intended water use — household supply, irrigation, livestock, or commercial operations. Test pumping data shows sustainable yield, static water level, and correct pump capacity so we can size the system and quote accurately.

What is a borehole pumping test, and why do you need one?

Accepted Answer

A pumping test (also called a pump test or test pumping) extracts water at controlled rates while we monitor drawdown and recovery inside the borehole. The results show the safe sustainable yield — how much you can pump long-term without damaging the well or aquifer. Powerwell uses that data to size the submersible pump, solar array, and operating settings. Choosing a pump without a pumping test is a common cause of early failure and disappointing water supply.

Will borehole water be salty, and how do you check quality?

It depends on local geology. Coastal areas such as Mombasa, and some inland aquifers, can show higher salinity or minerals that are not obvious by taste. After development we send a sample for laboratory testing covering parameters such as TDS, pH, hardness, iron, fluoride, and bacteria. Results show whether water is safe to drink as-is, needs treatment, or suits irrigation and livestock — so pump and treatment choices are based on data, not guesswork.
